Miami -- On Friday, May 2, at 8:00 pm at Gusman Hall on the Coral Gables campus of the University of Miami, Dick Hyman will present a concert titled “An Evening of Solos and Diversions.” He will be joined by the new Dean of the Frost School of Music, Shelly Berg. Mr. Hyman is known to the general public through the films of Woody Allen. However, to the jazz world, of over 100 recorded albums, his definitive work is “100 Year of Jazz Piano.”
Hyman is the composer/arranger/conductor/pianist for such classic Woody Allen films as “Zelig,” “The Purple Rose of Cairo,” “Broadway Danny Rose,” “Stardust Memories,” “Hannah and Her Sisters,” and others.
Shelly Berg, a noted jazz pianist, who has burst onto the Miami music scene as the Frost School of Music’s energetic new Dean, will dazzle the audience when he joins Dick Hyman for two piano improvisations.
This performance is the second annual event sponsored by Friends of the Young Musicians’ Camp in memory of the well-known guitarist and educator, Simon Salz. All the proceeds from the concert are donated to the Camp’s scholarship fund, enabling many talented but financially underprivileged South Florida music students to attend a summer music camp at the University of Miami. The Young Musicians’ Camp, was started in 2000 by Simon Salz and his wife, Sarah, and awarded over $ 60,000 in scholarships to young musicians last summer.
Ticket prices are $ 10 (students), $ 15 ( seniors 65+) $ 20. (general admission) and $ 50 (includes after-concert reception with the artists.)
